Varnish On King
To celebrate Home Cooked Heston and his girlfriends birthday (because we are a day apart :D), we decided on a bar in Perth named Varnish On King Whiskey Bar. King street is a tiny narrow street that runs through the middle of Perth’s CBD and is home to some very high end fashion shops and some amazing little bars. Varnish is down at the Wellington end. As you walk through the two big wooden doors and down two flights of stairs you are greeted to a very busy and happening bar. The walls are covered in all different types of whiskeys and the smell from the kitchen is just as exquisite.
There was eleven of us in total and we all had a good go at covering the food menu. The four dishes that my girlfriend and I had were the scollops, the prawns, the beef short ribs and the duck. All dishes were cooked perfectly but the one stand out dish for us all was the smoked duck it really was an epic dish.
About halfway though dinner I was told that there was an item you could order that involved bourbon and beer. I was wondering why I missed this on the menu I had to try and I did. Four great bourbons matched with four amazing rashers of bacon. Probably some of the best bacon I have ever tried ever.
Thank you to everyone who came and Thank You Varnish for the great night.
i’ve been meaning to go and check out that bourbon and bacon dish for ages!

You are definitely right in regards to the duck dish! It is by far my favourite and I have it almost every time I am there if I am able. If you are ever able to, definitely try the whisky degustation that they do occasionally, there is a beef cheek ravioli dish that was by far the stand out when I attended. As for the boilermaker (the shot of whisky paired with a beer), the also do one which is a fireball (cinnamon whisky) paired with a Kirin cider which is definitely a stand out and worth a try if you ever return. 🙂

The Laneway Lounge does some fantastic cocktails and has quite good food also. It is just around the corner as well. Helvetica is a great whisky bar also in the CBD area. And Ezra Pound on the Northbridge side is a lovely small bar too. 🙂

Haven’t been to Andaluz. I shall keep it in mind for next time. 🙂 Oh and The Cheeky Sparrow is always great too. I’m going to stop now because the list of great little bars emerging in Perth is endless. I will conclude with Who’s Your Mumma? Which is a fantastic bar with some great whiskies in Fremantle if you were ever in the area. Obviously some distance from the CBD but if you are exploring whiskey/scotch/bourbon speciality bars it is well worth a mention. 🙂
